LinkWithin Gadget for Related Posts

Who doesn’t want to have new visitors explore their blog? After all, the archives have some great posts (even if you say so yourself!). A widget called LinkWithin helps reader’s find related posts as they finish an article.

Don’t Let Your Past Stories Go to Waste!

We retrieve and index all stories from your blog archive, not just recent stories, making them accessible to new or casual readers of your blog who would not otherwise encounter them.- LinkWithin

The software presents thumbnail images with the titles of up to five related posts. I used to do manually provide text links, but that got tiresome.

LinkWithin is not new, I’m just late in trying it. Remember I want to reduce the bounce rate for search engine visits. Well this is one of my methods.

LinkWithin is easy to install; just go to their website, input your blog url and they will link directly into the Blogger dashboard. You then create the page element and drag it from the sidebar to below the posts element.

Worked like a charm for me. However the related posts were showing on the homepage below each excerpt. A little to crowed!

But, heh, I remembered there is a post to hide widgets from the home page — luck for you and me! It the one about hiding Blogger widgets on the homepage.

Hiding the related posts thumbnails on Home Page

Go to your html layout, check the ‘show widgets’ box and find the one installed by LinkWithin — looks like this:
***

<b:widget id=’HTML7′ locked=’false’ title=’LinkWithin’ type=’HTML’>
<b:includable id=’main’>
<data:content/>
</b:includable></b:widget>

Just insert the conditional tags that tell Blogger to not show on the homepage. The section would then look like this with the lines in green framing the data display:

<b:widget id=’HTML7′ locked=’false’ title=’LinkWithin’ type=’HTML’>
<b:includable id=’main’>

<!– only display if not home page 5/2010 –>
<b:if cond=’data:blog.pageType == “item”‘>

<data:content/>
<!– added 5/2010 for non-homepage –></b:if>
</b:includable></b:widget>

  1. Hi Manolis,
    I appreciate your comment — wish you had left a url to your blog! I'm finding so few people take the time to figure out the Disqus system! It needs to be easier I guess…
